Tissot Watches

Charles Félicien Tissot (1804-1873) founded with his son Charles-Emile (1830-1910) in 1853 in Le Locle a workshop that produced with foreign parts pocket watches. , Charles-Emile traveled frequently to Russia and the United States to sell their products. In the seventies, Tissot was also massively affected by the crisis of the Swiss watch industry, which was triggered by the 1973 oil crisis, the emergence of cheaper imports from the Far East and the delayed adjustment to the quartz technology. In 1977, the branches in Peseux NE were closed and La Chaux-de-Fonds and abandoned the production of own movements completely. Nevertheless, Tissot wrote continues losses, so that in 1983 a collapse of the company seemed imminent. The rescue brought finally the concentration of SSIH and ASUAG (General Swiss Watch AG) to the Swatch Group, headed by Nicolas Hayek in 1985, which led to a comprehensive reorganization of the Swiss watch industry and expand into new markets.

In the eighties and nineties, Tissot made a name through a series of fashionable watches with housings made of unusual materials such as granite ("Rock Watch", 1987) and wood ("Woodwatch", 1991).
